Low Birth Weight Infants and Preterm Births
Ethnic and cultural disparities associated with preterm births and low birth weights in infants are still a major threat despite having advanced medical care. The difference of localities that may have different exposures of the environment may lead to racial disparities in preterm births and birth of low weight infants. Air pollution in places like Iran the level of lead that is causing pollution in that country has contributed much to preterm births, premature membrane rupture and the birth of infants with very low weights. Also in California due to air pollution, there are many preterm births (Fleischer et al.., 2014). Socioeconomic status of different races in a place contributes to preterm births if in association with demographic differences.
Extremely low weight birth babies affects the community and the family of the baby because there are me immaturities that come with that baby. The family may have an emotional and financial burden for the time that the baby will be in NICU which is costly. The community and may also lose the baby since they are at morbidity and mortality risks (Fleischer et al.., 2014). The community and the family may live in fear of having a repeat of such a case. Since the baby may have a problem in understanding studies and may repeat grades that may lower the emotions of the family and the child too.
In my home area, the group that has been of great help to the families with preterm cases is Calvin's Hat. They are a helping hand to babies born too early for survival. The link for this support service is www.calvinhats.com. The service addresses the needs of our community since there are so many premature births that occur due to the air pollution in our town. They help with the pain of losing their son Calvin who was born before time but could not survive without special care.
