When James' father arrived in the truck to pick him up for a trip home, it was still dark, so when James turned to look at his father in the faint light of the dashboard, he noticed that his father had a tight jaw. However, James was unconcerned about his father's silence, which he understood was a symptom of a tough day at work for the father. As a result, James wondered how his father's day had gone and whether his father would tell him stories from the storybook or whether he would just take the newspaper and go straight from the table to the bedroom to be alone. James made up his mind that he wanted to be helpful to his mom in case his dad was sad so she would not cry again that night.

According to “Basic Dialogue Mechanism” (2), dialogue tags are not necessary especially when one has established who is talking in a conversation. Therefore, the dialogue between Joe and the speaker should appear as below:
"Hey buddy, how are you doing?" Joe uttered immediately he saw me and motioned me to stop.
"I am doing fine, thank you. What is it?" I asked him
"My older sister has a wedding party today, and I would like to invite you to join us in the celebration. Are you coming?"
Joe’s family does things strangely.
The statement above does not have tags because it is not a dialogue. “Basic Dialogue Mechanism” (2) requires that one do not use conversation marks when giving a new direction.
When Joe’s parents climb the table he shouted: “Yeah, there mom you can do it!”
