The narrator feels jealous of the blind man because of his platonic relationship with his wife
Question 1
The narrator is envious of the blind man's platonic friendship with his wife. The narrator is bothered and worried that the blind man and his wife have maintained contact over the years and that someone he does not know will be living in his home. In general, the narrator's uneasiness seems to stem from his having never encountered a blind person before.

The narrator becomes more at ease as he gets to know the blind man. Also, the narrator's ten beers and a portion of a marijuana cigarette over the course of the evening didn't hurt. Beyond the easing of inhibitions facilitated by the evening’s imbibing, the narrator shared experiences with the blind man through helping him to “see” what a cathedral looks like with the drawing they did together.

Helping the blind man to “see”, the narrator had the experience of being able to see with his mind’s eyes just like a blind man. The narrator’s statement that he didn’t feel like he was inside anything could be his passage from his narrow life into a much bigger universal space, or it could have been just the after-effects of 10 scotch-whiskeys and a few hits of marijuana.

Metaphorically, blindness in this short story is meant to portray the prejudice which the narrator held for the blind man. In the beginning of the story, the narrator’s prejudice is obvious when he states, “A blind man in my house was not something I looked forward to” (Carver para. 1). It was clear that the narrator felt uncomfortable.
