The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Back in the nineteenth century, women in society had it tough because they couldn't vote, hold lucrative workforce jobs, have some voice in significant social matters, or even speak in front of an audience like their male counterparts. Furthermore, a married woman had no control not only over herself, but even over her son, clothing, and even jewels, since she was only entitled to one-third of her husband's property if he died before her. To make people understand the women’s plight during her time, Charlotte Perkins Gilman uses symbols in her story Yellow Wallpaper to convey the message.
The yellow paper is one of the symbols employed by the author to pass her message on the restrictions faced by women, struggles to attain equality, women responsibilities and discrimination. The yellow color is occasionally linked with weakness and sickness. As she states in the story, the Gilman says she has never seen a worse paper in here entire life, symbolizing the mental distress bestowed upon women by men. The wallpaper illusions she sees is her trying to escape the jaws of her cruel husband, John.
The moonlight used in the story is also symbolic. For one, depressed and trapped people and the werewolves have at least one thing in common; they are fictitious. The two parties are activated by La Luna, especially during the night. Just when the moonlight gets to shine on the wall, then is when the woman creeps out, implying that the woman sleeps only during the day and lies awake the entire night to strategize on the intellectual activities to suppress when John, her husband is keenly watching.
