A society's culture is perceived to be the driving force behind human actions. When I watched the movie Chocolat, I saw characters who formed their cultural horizons of individualism and modernity in the sense of the western cultural environment. In Chocolate, the social ideal of freedom and self-reliance for survival is represented by Vianne Rocher and Josephine. In comparison, the society in which they live consists of a static community of the citizens Reynaud and Henri who do not acknowledge the change that Vianne has introduced to the village of Lansquenet. Before her coming, I can view the situation where Lansquenet-sous-Cannes is conservative, and Vianne as a character is seen as a liberator who makes it dynamic and ready to accept change.

Response 2

Though Chocolat does not address religion visions, it has some content that is comparable to Christianity culture and the Western culture. Vianne’s lifestyle, perception, and behavior are different when compared to Christian perception of a good life. For instance, she opens a chocolate shop just at the beginning Lent, and it is centrally to the people’s perception in the religious believes the people hold (Hallström, n.p).
Regarding belongingness and universal good news held by Christians, Vianne holds an ideology where she feels comfortable in believing in herself that she can make it a success. The beginning of the chocolate shop implies freedom from all what people hold as beliefs during Lent where there should be fasting. However, Vianne expresses compassion and love for the unfortunate. She is working for the freedom of the enslaved people by the religious ideal because, when she opens the shop, many people break the fasting and others like Josephine who are mistreated by the “born again” husband is relieved at Vianne’s premises.

Response 3

Vianne’s behavior is a reflection of an innocent and clean conscience in her actions. Christianity requires people to be upright in morals and do what pleases God so as they will inherit the Kingdom of God. However, the movie uses the movie to criticize this notion because the viewers can see that many characters are acting religious whereas they are not. Vianne is portrayed to possess immoral conduct as Christianity ideals imply but also shows that religion in Lansquenet-sous-Cannes is for promoting the cultural visions and not promoting the kingdom of God. Vienne in Chocolat have a critic of the religion of ceremonies and demonstrates the actions of love, compassion, freedom, and liberty, which are the true culture of God.
