Enviroment and Animal Ethics
Animal studies are a procedure which has severely abused animal rights in the development of medicine. Despite the fact that there are those who contend that the benefits go beyond the harm caused, most animals end up suffering and their quality of life is diminished significantly. In fact, it is morally unethical to conduct such an operation if experiments breach the right of the animal. Therefore, it is meaningless and should be dismissed the statement that animal rights are to be abused for the good of humanity. Such a view is held by those that affirm anthropocentrism which highlights that moral standing should only be granted to human beings (Cochrane). One of the ethical principles violated is the non-maleficence principle, which entails that research ought not to be done in a way that inflicts harm to other species. It is well-known to the researchers of the impact of these tests, as they are cognizant of the negative long-term effects that animals will be subjected to. In correcting such a violation, the principle of justice ought to be applied, since animals as well as humans have a right that need to be protected. Such a view is in line with Albert Schweitzer’s idea that a moral standing ought to be granted to all living things (Wilson). Therefore, there needs to be alternative methods devised to ensure that no one suffers. Replacing animal testing is not supposed to mean that humans are to be subjected to risks; rather, it is a way that will ensure that humaneness in the science is upheld. A possible alternative would include the use of cell cultures, computer models, and even using human tissues.
