State elements are accessible throughout life from the day the individual is born to the day the death certificates are released. The essence of the State cannot be easily understood even with all these presences in our lives. The complexity of understanding the state led to the creation of diverse sociologic theories by previous sociologists that numerous scholars discussed (Godfrey-Smith & Peter, 2009). The State can also be called the government apparatus; it is used to monitor and regulate the way we live and our life-long activities. Understanding the nature of the state has been difficult, in this post we will look at the several theories that have been developed trying to explain the nature of the state.
First is the general concept of the state, this concept presents the state as being comprised of many interpretations and concepts in politics and social sciences. It is one of the most shared understandings of the state that many people have been using to describe the state. However, there are many other opinions and interpretations of the state that are far from this (Adams & Tracey, 2015). This concept is an important one and is not overlooked by the sociologists studying the nature of the state; it gives light on how the separation of powers is done within the state. It also explains that everyone can have power, but no one can have more power than others.
Another theory that accounts for the nature of the state is Marx's theory; The state as the repressive arm of the bourgeoisie. Many sociological scholars view this approach from different angles; this is because Marx does not give an explicit theory of the state. In his famous superstructure metaphor, Marx places the state in the realm of the structure. One of the ideas that can be obtained from this theory is that the state is brought into existence by the fact that many other classes exist below it (Godfrey-Smith & Peter, 2009). According to Marx, classes only exist because of history and are bound to disappear in future, the only reason that makes the classes exist in the production of extra produce that is supplied to the classes.
Marx also gave the definition and emergence of the state; he says that a state is a form of structure in which those who are in the ruling class assert their ideas to the rest, he argues that the ideas of the ruling class are the ideas that rule. The state can be a self-determination of the people if the democracy in the region is well managed and accurate. The state functions are subdivided into classes; primary and secondary. The state functions are crucial when it comes to explaining the various classes that exist for the state to work. Durkheim and Weber also give their explanation of the state, the definition and the functions of the state. From all the theories, Weber's theory influences the current political realms more than the other theories (Adams & Tracey, 2015). Durkheim also gives a successful explanation on the role of the state and how the transition from societies who had mechanical solidarity to corporations that have solidarity that is organized well. However, Marx's theory is more straightforward, and he does not give a clear difference between the state and bourgeoisie.
